Now even Mercedes-Benz is planning and working on the launch of compact small car in India. They are developing this car with an investment of around Rs 6,000 crore at their Banglore research and development centre. This amount indicates the seriousness of Mercedes-benz to target Indian market on a vast scale.

Chief financial officer and member of the board of management, Mercedes-Benz India, Uwe Jarosch said, “In the long term, we can develop our own car for India. The days of having global models are changing and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are looking at market-specific models. We feel there would be a need for an India-specific car by us in the future.”

Even BMW is researching and planning to design a small car in a range from 5 to 8 lakh for the Indian market. BMW is planning to invest US$ 15.76 million in its Indian operations.

Toyoto also plans to invest US$ 107 million to manufacture components for Toyota's new small segment car Etios which they launched in December 2010.

Various big names small cars are being launched in India last year like Toyota’s Etios, Volkswagen’s Polo, Skoda’s improved Fabia, Renault-Nissan’s Micra, Honda’s Jazz, Hyundai’s improved i10 and i20 etc.

In Indian automobile market, 13,69,174 cars were sold in April-December 2010 which is thirty percent higher than the previous year in the same period.
