Railway Budget 2012: seems good for the betterment of Indian Railway

The Railway Minister of India, Dinesh Trivedi introduced the railway budget for the financial year 2012-2013 in the parliament. This budget seems good as it is being made keeping in mind the need of the betterment of the Indian railway instead of bringing popular budget.

Marginal increase is being done in the train fares and now Sleeper class will cost 5 paisa/km more, 3 AC 10 paisa/km more, 2 AC 15 paisa/km more, 1 AC 30 paisa/km more. 2 paisa is being increased for the passenger class. Plateform ticket will cost Rs. 5 instead of present Rs. 3.


Attempt will be made to remove all the unmanned crossings in next five years. On the track of 3000 km, alarm system will be installed. One lac persons will be recruited during the financial year 2012-2013.

High speed corridor will be made from New Delhi to Jodhpur via jaipur. Speed of the train will be made 160 km/hour plus.

45 new lines will be made. 100 stations will be made on the lines of airports. 929 stations will be upgraded to incorporate better infrastructure. 21 new passenger trains and 75 new express trains will be introduced. In Kolkata, 50 new local trains and in Mumbai, 75 new local trains will be introduced.

New track will be laid down in tribal and isolated areas. Focus will be given on NE India and J&K. longest tunnel will be made in the Peer Panjal area of the state of J&k. 2100 special designed coaches for differently abled persons will be introduced. A new rail link to connect India with Bangladesh is being proposed.

Focus will be on safety and modernization. There are plans to modernize 19000 km of the track. Investment of 5.60 lac crore will be required for this work. Two new coach factories will be estabilished in Gujrat.

It will be important to see that how much of all this proposed will be implemented in practical. Indian railway needs a facelift and it should be done as it is the high time.
