Ford unveiled a compact sport utility vehicle, EcoSport that will be made at Ford India's plant near Chennai. Built on the same platform as the Fiesta sedan, Eco Sport will fit into small car segment.

Ford India is going to invest US$ 142 million in its Chennai plant to build the EcoSport. They expect that this car will create a new segment in Indian market for itself over the time.

It will also have diesel and other engine options. The Eco Sport's new version makes its global debut in India ahead of its introduction in about 100 markets globally, thereby highlighting the relevance of the Indian market.

The vehicle is fitted with a new one-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, with turbo charger and direct injection and is expected to match the performance of a 1.6-litre engine, according to the firm. The new engine would also have a benefit of a 30 per cent increase in mileage and a 20 per cent reduction in CO2 emission.

India and Brazil would be in charge of the car’s production, which is likely to be introduced in India towards the end of 2012.

Ford is increasing its market share in India since the launch of Figo hatchback. The company has sold 96,270 vehicles in India in the year 2011. It seems that the launch of EcoSport will further boost their market share.
